Thursday January 6, 2011, McMurdo Base, Antarctica

The day has come to leaved the Pole. Last night I packed my bags and took took them to the departure dock. All baggage must be weighed the night before boarding. The rest of my stuff, including regulation cold weather clothing (ECW) I had to take with me. My plane left the South Pole at about 12:45. In the morning I worked a little bit on packing shipments of equipment that needs to return to Madison and did another run of the Sweden Camera. Today there were three flights from Pole: The first one brought more staff including new members of IceCube. We left in the second flight. Once we arrived at McMurdo (rather Pegasus), it took us over an hour to reach the station due to weather conditions. Upon arrival at the station (about half past five) we were instructed to go to the cafeteria to eat and then to "bag drag" at  seven o'clock for the Christchurch flight that was to leave at four o'clock in the morning. We have to be ready for land transport at two o'clock. After dinner Jens and I went exploring around Scott's hut to see if we could find any penguins but this was to no avail. This time we didn't even see any seals. Following that, Jens and I went to the cafe to enjoy a glass of wine. I just called to Amy (we now have satellite 24 hours a day!) And am now on the computer, drinking coffee, waiting until it's time to go (and trying not to fall asleep). By the way, I did get a bath and was able to do laundry on Tuesday afternoon.
