Próxima estación: McMurdo

Viernes 17 de diciembre.

Hoy salimos rumbo a McMurdo.
...Cambio y fuera.

Friday 17 December.

Today we set off for McMurdo. The van comes to pick up at a quarter to nine. We have to be in the CDC at nine and a half to dress and pack our luggage (duffel bags oranges) that includes the equipment provided to us and those items we want to take to Antarctica. The rest is left in the CDC until we return. The flight leaves at noon. Yesterday we went to the CDC where we found two duffel bags waiting with all kinds of winter clothing, including parkas, boots, gloves, glasses, etc. We tested all the equipment to make sure it all fit well and made necessary changes: my gloves were a little small and based on recommendations, I also asked for extra glove liners. We had the afternoon off and I went to the Cantenbury Museum to see an exhibition about the early expeditions to the Pole including those by Roald including Admunsen and Robert Scott to conquer the South Pole. Later I walked with a colleag from IceCube through the center where we appreciated the extent of the damage caused by the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred last September here in Christchurch.
I awoke in the middle of the night because my body still does not get used to the time change but I managed to sleep a few hours later. Finally, I got up at six. Soon I'll call Amy through Skype during her "lunch break". This will be the last time you can use Skype until my return. As I have understood, it is blocked at the station.
I hope to have the opportunity to see penguins in McMurdo before going to the Pole.
... Over and out.

Christchurch

Jueves 16 de diciembre, 2010.
Descansado.

Thursday December 16, 2010.
Rested. I slept pretty well after traveling 30 hours and wandering around the city for a while. Reynaldo woke me at about three o'clock in the morning since I left the instant messenger online. It wasn't hard to go back to sleep even with the time change. Of course, I woke up at six thirty and breakfast is not served until eight o'clock breakfast (in a few minutes.) I started working a bit on the IceCube simulation and then drank coffee before I showered. At one in the afternoon I have to be in the CDC (clothing distribution center) of the Antarctic program to choose my clothes and get instructions. If all goes according to plan leave tomorrow (do not know at what time, they say that sometimes come at four in the morning) due to the station in the  Mac Murdo Bay (coast of Antarctica). I imagine the blog entries will become more sparse. Greetings from the future! (Today is Thursday here while in Madison and still Guadalajara Wednesday.)

Nueva Zelanda

Saludos del "down under"

I finally got to Auckland, NZ. I'm waiting for the connection to Christchurch, NZ and I found this terminal with access to the web for free. I imagine the Christchurch airport terminals will also have these but I have no intention to spend all day reading email and writing in this blog. Summer is definitely here. I dressed light in Madison to avoid lugging coats and now I'm roasting. I will probably connect tomorrow or next day. For now I need a coffee after 26 hours traveling. Greetings from the "down under".

MSN

Comenzamos bien.

We are starting well. I'm at the airport in Madison. I arrived a little early since I was a little more nervous than usual. When trying to fill in the form of the airline with information from my passport there was an error indicating that the name did not match the reservation but for now all is well. My flight leaves a little late.
